The Rights Workshop At The Mill Valley Film Festival
We’d like to congratulate all of the filmmakers that have made their way to the 2010 Mill Valley Film Festival, in particular the makers of Child of Giants and Everyday Sunshine. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of these two projects and recommend that you stop by to check these out if you’re attending the event.
Child of Giants: My Journey with Maynard Dixon & Dorothea Lange
Late in life, the son of photographer Dorothea Lange and painter Maynard Dixon remains haunted by his celebrated parents. Featuring rarely seen archival materials, this is the fascinating story an anguished boy who negotiates an uneasy reconciliation with his past.
Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone
Directors Lev Anderson and Chris Metzler capture the mohawks and the mosh pits, the magic and the madness of the seminal punk-ska-metal band Fishbone through interviews, rare concert footage and animation. The inimitable Laurence Fishburne narrates.
Financial Round-Up: EMI, WMG, Live Nation, HMV and more
In August, EMI’s private equity owner, Maltby Capital (which was set up by Terra Firma), released an annual report that offered two important numbers. First, EMI’s net loss for the year ended March 31 was £512 million ($800 million). A big loss, yes, but an improvement over the previous year’s loss of £1.56 billion ($2.3 billion). Second, revenue improved about 5% to £1.65 billion ($2.5 billion).
In its fiscal third quarter, Warner Music Group reported a 15% drop in revenues to $652 million.
UMG’s revenue was $1.01 billion in the second quarter, up nearly 3% over the second quarter of 2009. But that followed a weak first quarter, and UMG’s revenue in the last 12 months were down nearly 8% versus the prior 12-month period.
In the quarter ended June 30, Sony Music’s sales increased 1.3% to $1.24 billion. Best-selling titles during the period included AC/DC’s soundtrack to “Iron Man 2,” music from the television show “Glee,” Usher’s Raymond vs. Raymond and Christina Aguilera’s Bionic.
DEEPER Premier
From the award winning producers at Teton Gravity Research (TGR), in partnership with Jeremy Jones, comes the most progressive big mountain snowboarding film to date, “DEEPER.” Ten years in the making, “Deeper” is not to be missed. Last night The Rights Workshop crew headed over to local sf music and arts venue The Independent to catch the San Francisco premier. Seeing Jeremy and his crew careening down mountains in Alaska, Lake Tahoe and the renowned Chamonix to songs like Jane’s Addiction “Ocean Size”, and Norman Greenbaum “Spirit in The Sky” was fantastic. You can check out the film and its music here.

Universal Music Acquires The International Rights To Franks Sinatra Albums
Universal Music just acquired the international rights to Frank Sinatra albums from the Sinatra Family and Warner Music, the Financial Times reports. Under the terms of the deal, Universal can reissue albums that Sinatra released for Reprise, the record label he founded in 1960 and later sold to Warner Music.
Those albums include: My Way, which is marking its 40th anniversary this year. (Warner maintains rights in North America). As the FT points out, deals like this one have become increasingly important in the music industry, which is coping with a dearth of new mega stars (Plus, the target Sinatra demographic is probably less likely to be illegally downloading tracks).
